Here is my concept map on static and dynamic technologies.  I believe that I am straddled the fence on technology use.  I will admit that as I reflect on my understanding and use of technology, the major reason I use and understand much in the dynamic realm of technology is because of my degree program at Walden University.  Technology and Web 2.0 has taken the world by storm and I believe that there is a constant flow of people who are migrating from static users of technology to the dynamic ebb and flow of web 2.0.  I believe that the best way to speed up the diffusion of technology and innovation in our world today is to influences the champions, which in my opinion are teachers, to excite and motivate others to learn and use innovations that has already changed the way we communicate and interact with each other today.

There are many types of technology that has many applications in education that is not being used in classrooms of today. Skype, face book and other web 2.0 applications have many great applications but are rarely used in education.  According to Siemen instead of viewing distance as a barrier to education, realize that it can be the conduit that allows rich interaction and growth, where academic growth can be achieved with a diverse set of learning tools. The three major factors that influence the flow and growth of distance education is communication, collaboration and content.  When viewed as a graphic organizer the interaction between them are obvious.  Information that can easily be shared with wikki’s is easily placed in both content and communication categories. This integration of concepts and tools are the keys to the continued growth of DE and innovative ways of changing the pedagogy of education.

Wow. I think the points you brought up are both valid and thought provoking.  Distance education is quickly become a norm in training, but the effectiveness of elearning is dependant on the provider of these services. I believe that there is a tremendous amount of research that support the concept of elearning as an effective training and teaching model, but still struggle with accepting it as an alternative to F2F training.

I believe that coloboration is important on all level, but technology allow colloboration to move into another dimension that cross over time contranst and location.  I agree with Dr. Dede, the problems we face will take many people working together to solve and the internet will be the connective glue that will allow us to work through problems and shape our future.

• How should participation in a collaborative learning community be assessed?

I believe that students who cooperate in a learning community should design and agree on a rubric to grade their work.  Students should cooperate in the design phase of the rubric to ensure that every voice and concern is addressed.  I believe that the assessment should be carried out by students who participate in the community with input from the teacher.  This first alleviate some of the work load on teachers and it allows students to develop higher level of understanding by allowing them to be able to evaluate and assess their peers.  Allowing students to create a manipulative also increase the opportunity to have a fair assessment regardless of starting skill level.

I believe that training and alternative assignments should be made available for those students who hesitate at participating in learning communities.  The training should be designed around the benefits and effectiveness of learning communities. I also think that some assignments should be given to students that allow them the opportunity to practice assignments in a learning community and without group participation.  This would be a great opportunity to train and help others evaluate the effectiveness of group assignments and assessments.
